Hidden Cities Dubai: Rami

November 25, 2018 / Dubai

Discover Dubai’s global-meets-local pop culture from a comic lover with mixed Arab roots.

See the city through the lens of a local graphic designer with a passion for all things skateboarding, sneakers and comic books. Get a glimpse of how Dubai’s diversity and youth is reflected in his art and personal collections, then step into Selectshop Frame in D3—a Japanese lifestyle culture shop where you can find skate brands, unique urban clothing labels, vinyl records, a specialty coffee bar, and YUi, a tiny ramen restaurant—all under one roof.

“Dubai itself as a city is quite young; there’s a very childlike nature to it. The architecture, the fact that we have a Minister of Happiness. There’s a really nice innocence to it.”

About Rami Afifi

Rami Afifi is a Dubai-based graphic designer and illustrator. As a one-man melting pot—with a mix of Palestinian, Egyptian and Jordanian family roots, an upbringing in Saudi Arabia and several years studying in the UK—he often celebrates his strong Arab roots through his artwork.

Rami, a self-titled comic book nerd, sneakerhead, skateboard lover and toy collector, is the current creative director of Anthlgy skateboards and co-founder of the Middle Beasts art collective. Also the former creative director of Philadelphia Skateboards and an ad man by trade, Rami’s most important job title at present is being a family man and father to his 2-year-old daughter.
