Uber's Asian community

Our goal

Our mission is to celebrate and promote the wealth of Asian ideas and culture throughout Uber.

Accomplishments

Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year is one of the biggest holidays throughout Asia. Knowing this, our ERG decided to celebrate the New Year with our Asian Heritage driver partners in San Francisco. We hosted a free dimsum lunch, which was full of decorations, and even had red pocket envelopes that contained prizes for a few lucky winners! This was an incredible event where we could connect with our driver partners socially, culturally, and emotionally. It was a Happy New Year had by all!

Leadership Lunches

With a focus on development for our ERG members, we decided to launch a series of leadership lunches. The goal of the series is to highlight inspiring Asian leaders across the Uber organization, focusing on each individual’s rise to leadership and his or her identity as a leader. Participants have come from all parts of the organization and many interesting stories and learnings have been shared throughout these intimate lunches.

One Thousand Cranes

The Senbazuru is a group of one thousand origami paper cranes held together by strings. The Senbazuru comes from an ancient Japanese legend that says a wish will be granted to anyone who folds 1000 paper cranes. Often, Senbazuru are given to loved ones in the hospital, to wish them a speedy recovery. Our ERG decided to coordinate this effort across the company and give them to Travis Kalanick, our previous CEO, when he lost his mother.
