We're seeking a Design Director for Uber Freight, joining our Freight leadership team reporting directly to the Freight GM.

 

You are an excellent design leader with strong product vision, a mind towards execution, and a desire to build a culture that elevates the team. You know how to set the bar high. Uber Freight ships fast. You know what quality looks like and how to help product teams ship at that quality with minimal impact on velocity.

 

You will be a strong partner to the Engineering and Product teams in order to realize Uber's global vision, and together, become the best design team in the industry.

 

You hire excellent people. You're able to create the systems for you (and others) to effectively evaluate and hire designers and researchers who can take Uber to new levels of excellence.

 

Through action, coaching and mentoring, you teach the soft and hard skills. You help designers become the collaborative glue that inspires product management and engineering while also developing their core competencies at envisioning what could be.

You increase the effectiveness of the entire team. You improve the design, engineering and product teams, not just your direct reports. As a leader and example-setter you should be more effective when you're not even in the room. Your processes will be celebrated, emulated and copied by teams throughout the organization.

You will be report to the GM of Uber Freight, who reports directly into the CEO of Uber.

What you'll need

Summary of expectations

  • 14+ years of professional experience, of which, you’ve spent 8+ years in management.
  • Will have managed other managers, as well as senior individual contributors or staff level designers.
  • Have built a team of 20 or more.
  • Proven ability to lead through multiple levels of management leadership, and steer an organization.
  • Expected to envision the future for our team, project the needs, see around corners to anticipate problems and challenges.

 

Problem Scope and Complexity

  • Knows how to build a close relationship with peer leaders, Director of Engineering, Head of Product Management, the GM, Director of strategy and planning, Director of Marketing.
  • Helps set forth a company wide vision and direction with the team.
  • Aligns team priorities and deliverables to company’s overall strategic goals.
  • Demonstrates long term thinking around strategic and business focused activities.
  • Has a measurable impact on the business.
