About the Role


Uber ATG is looking to significantly grow the team responsible for building the technology used to product the HD map for the car. The AVMaps department, based in Pittsburgh and with an office in Boulder is seeking multiple experienced Software Engineering Managers or Tech Lead/Managers (TLM) to join our team. 


The Workflow Team, based in Pittsburgh, is responsible for ensuring all steps of the map creation process are managed, tracked and automated. They are responsible for taking requests for updates to a map (or a new map to be made) and ensuring the correct steps happen as the data flows between the systems that create and validate the data. The short term goals for this team are to fully automate the pipelines and manage the exceptions to reduce overall throughput and latency in pushing an update to our maps. The Workflow Team works with C++, Python and Go to build scalable microservices to support the map making process. They work closely with the AVMaps Production teams within the department as well as the AVMaps Applications, Infrastructure and Core teams. The ideal Manager is able to see the big picture for how to optimally build a map and is capable of building the team to build and deploy a wide range of tools.


All of the AVMaps teams work closely together and each Manager must be a strong leader capable of working in a team environment where the success of the department depends on all teams, Manager and Technical Leads working collaboratively on solutions. As a Manager in the ATG, you will be expected to wear many hats, form being technically competent to manage discussions with external teams and bring new technical solutions into the ATG. You are expected to be proficient at planning the work for your team and setting milestones and targets with your team. As a Manager, you will also be expected to manage the growth of your team to ensure the objectives of the ATG can be met in a timely manner. In addition to your management and leadership skills, you will be leveraging your technical strengths to guide and coach highly skilled Engineers on your team.

What You’ll Need
  • 5 years of experience managing people and their performance
  • Prior experience managing a team of roboticists, computer scientists and software engineers
  • Ability to demonstrate technical mastery of designs and implementation details and be a respected peer of your most senior team members
  • People management experience nurturing careers, managing under- and over-performers, influencing cross-functional teams, recruiting and building teams
  • Passion for designing and delivering mission critical code and products
  • Ability to work beyond your core engineering field and understand how the pieces fit together in the larger system
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies and adapt easily to meet the needs of our massive growth and rapidly evolving business environment
  • Passion and a sense of ownership over everything you ship
  • A team player mentality with the belief that more can be achieved as a team and ability to understand how decisions affect others in the organization
  • Ability to champion good API design and interface patterns for mission critical access to the map data
  • Ability to work, plan and report in an Agile development environmen
