At Uber, we ignite opportunity by setting the world in motion. We take on big problems to help drivers, riders, delivery partners, and eaters get moving in more than 600 cities around the world.
We welcome people from all backgrounds who seek the opportunity to help build a future where everyone and everything can move independently. If you have the curiosity, passion, and collaborative spirit, work with us, and let’s move the world forward, together.
About the Role
Uber is changing the world, and the Uber Legal Team is proud to be part of that. We’re looking for exceptional legal professionals to join our Emerging Technologies legal team in San Francisco or Pittsburgh. The Emerging Technologies legal team supports Uber’s Emerging Technologies business lines, which include self-driving vehicles (Uber ATG) and vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft (Uber Elevate).
What You'll Do
Serve as a front-line attorney advising teams in Uber ATG’s software teams building self-driving technology. You will advise on legal issues related to inbound and outbound licensing, open source, code health, and other copyright issues. You will support a dynamic organization of product managers, software engineers, designers, deal makers, and others who are responsible for bringing the products of the future to reality.
Work directly with business clients to provide on-the-ground support and identify potential legal issues, and you will work with other members of the legal team to help resolve those issues. You will work on a variety of legal issues relating to the business, including issues such as: Open Source Licensing, IP licensing, IP protection, commercial law, litigation risk, and data privacy and protection.
Act as the frontline lawyer for your business clients. You will provide legal support to your clients by resolving matters directly, working with other Emerging Technology team members, and collaborating with members of the larger legal team.
Provide specialized support to your business clients as well as other team members regarding legal subjects within your personal expertise, particularly software and copyright matters (including licensing, open source, and code health issues).
Review global products, features, and initiatives to assess legal compliance across multiple jurisdictions, from the early stages of product development through launch.
Negotiate a variety of commercial contracts, including licensing agreements.
What You'll Need
J.D. and license to practice law in at least one state is required.
Minimum of five (5) years of legal experience
Experience advising software teams on copyright, licensing, and open source issues
Experience with reviewing, drafting and negotiating a variety of commercial agreements, including technology and licensing contracts
Experience working for an engineering-driven technology company preferred
Must be collaborative, and able to operate in a fast-paced environment
Demonstrated business aptitude and ability to move quickly
Appetite for being a key player in a rapidly growing company
Genuine interest in new technologies. Bonus points for a technical background and a willingness to get into the weeds with engineers and other clients!
Inquisitiveness, along with the ability to spot issues, get to the heart of a matter, and articulate plans to address
Ability to present information/complex legal matters clearly, and concisely
Collaborative approach with both business and legal groups, with strong ability to build relationships, gain credibility, and partner with others
Passionate about your work and a desire to have a big impact. Your job will matter – you will never be bored
