Senior Mechanical Engineer

Hardware, Engineering
in Sunnyvale, California
- Full Time

About the Role

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer on our AV Labs Hardware team, you will own and drive the mechanical structural design and system integration of critical vehicle subsystems, including complex sensor arrays and computation modules. By executing design for manufacturability (DFM) and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams and global manufacturing vendors, you will shepherd complex hardware from the initial proof-of-concept phase through to mass production. Ultimately, your innovative solutions and rigorous validation strategies will directly impact the reliability, safety, and scalable deployment of our next-generation autonomous data collection fleet.

What the Candidate Will Do

  • Drive mechanical structural design projects as the end-to-end owner of a mechanical module, taking full responsibility for on-time delivery of design release and product launch. You will contribute to architecture definition and execute the integration of sensor systems, computation modules, and cabin hardware from the requirement collection phase through to final launch.
  • Build and iterate on the integration of mechanical structures, enclosures, sensors, harnesses, PCBAs, and thermal modules at both the component level and the overall vehicle module level.
  • Execute mechanical component validation and testing by drafting comprehensive test plans, customizing testing profiles, building test fixtures, and collaborating closely with external labs.
  • Partner with local and global cross-functional teams, OEMs, and manufacturing vendors to shepherd projects through design, DFM, DFA, prototyping, iteration builds, and into mass production.
  • Create and maintain essential engineering documentation—including BOMs, SOPs, and troubleshooting instructions—and provide hands-on training and handovers to technicians.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering alongside 7+ years of industrial experience in product mechanical design, with a strong preference for backgrounds in autonomous driving, consumer electronics, or semiconductors.
  • Expertise in 3D CAD modeling (such as Solidworks, CATIA) and GD&T, coupled with hands-on experience integrating complex mechanical structures, sensor systems, compute modules, and thermal components.
  • Proven track record navigating full-cycle product development from Proof of Concept (POC) to Mass Production (MP), demonstrating deep proficiency in DFM, DFA, FMEA, prototyping, and design validation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced proficiency in structural and thermal simulation tools, including FEA and CFD (such as ANSYS, Icepack, and Solidworks Simulation), alongside experience utilizing Matlab for data analysis and modeling.
  • Demonstrated project management experience and the ability to own complex subsystem designs, influence architecture decisions, oversee system integration, and mentor junior engineers.
  • Extensive hands-on background in mechanical component validation and testing, specifically in drafting test plans, collaborating with external labs, customizing testing profiles, and building custom test fixtures.
  • Strong capability to collaborate with global cross-functional teams, OEMs, and manufacturing vendors (such as Asia FATP), driving DFM, DOEs, and FACA to successfully resolve complex quality and build issues.
