Ride with confidence

The Uber platform was built with safety in mind. Through incident prevention tools, insurance coverage, and technology that keeps you connected, we’re dedicated to helping you move safely and focus on what matters most.

Masks are now recommended, per provincial guidelines

Following updates to provincial guidelines, riders and drivers in Canada are no longer required by Uber to wear masks, unless required by law.*

However, as per Health Canada’s advice, we recommend wearing a mask depending on personal risk factors and infection rates in your area.

Remember: many people still feel safer wearing a mask because of personal or family health situations, so please be respectful of their preferences. And if you ever feel uncomfortable, you can always cancel the trip.

Updating our no-front-seat policy

Riders are no longer required to sit in the back seat. However, to give drivers space, we ask that riders only use the front seat if it’s required because of the size of their group.

Thank you for helping take care of one another

We know the pandemic has been difficult. But you’ve continued to go the extra mile to help protect our communities—whether it’s wearing a mask or making space for one another. Thank you for that.

It’s still important to take safety precautions while riding, driving, and delivering. So make sure to roll down the windows for extra airflow, sanitize your hands before and after trips or deliveries, and always cover your cough or sneeze.

Emergency help if you need it

If you ever need urgent help on a trip with Uber, you can contact 911 using the in-app Emergency Button in the Safety Toolkit.

The app will display your live location, vehicle information, and licence plate number, which you can quickly share with the 911 dispatcher so they can send help faster.

Your number stays private in the app

Your phone number is private–and it should stay that way. We use technology to keep your number anonymous, so drivers will not see it when you call through the app, unless you decide to share it with them.

Designing a safer ride

Always on the map

To help keep you safe, technology is built into each part of the ride—from pickup to dropoff and everywhere in between.

Features to help keep you safe

On every trip, you can tap a button for safety tools and get help whenever you need it.

Community Guidelines

Our guidelines ask you to treat others with respect, follow the law, and keep one another safe. Anyone who doesn’t follow them may lose access to our apps.

Drivers must clear several screenings

Before they can use the Uber platform, drivers undergo a thorough background check in accordance with applicable rideshare regulations and bylaws. The background check includes a review of the individual’s driving history and criminal history.

In order to drive on the Uber platform, drivers must make sure every vehicle complies with requirements of vehicle type and minimum model year, as required by applicable rideshare regulations, and be insured with a valid and in-force policy.

Peace of mind for where you’re going

Safety features are designed into the app. So you get home after a night out. So you can tell your loved ones where you are. And so there’s help if something unexpected happens.**

Emergency assistance button

You can use the in-app Emergency Button to call 911 to get help if you need it. The app displays your location and trip details, so you can quickly share them with the 911 dispatcher. In select Canadian cities, this information is automatically shared with emergency services when you call.**

Phone number anonymization

The app makes phone numbers anonymous, so your personal information stays private.

On-Trip Reporting

If you feel unsafe while on a trip, you can immediately and discreetly report it to Uber. A member of our Safety team will reach out for support shortly after the trip.

Insurance on every trip

In accordance with applicable rideshare regulations and bylaws, Uber maintains commercial auto insurance to help protect you and others in case of a covered accident while ridesharing on the Uber app. Our main insurance partner is Economical Insurance.

Check your ride, every time you ride

Matching the car with the information in your app makes for a safer ride. You can also turn on Verify Your Ride PIN verification for an added layer of protection.

Always be certain that you get into the right vehicle by following these steps:

Step 1

Match the licence plate number.

Step 2

Match the car make and model.

Step 3

Check the driver's photo.

Our Community Guidelines were established to keep Uber enjoyable and inclusive for everyone. Any person who doesn’t follow the guidelines can lose their access to the platform.
