Your Best San Francisco Thanksgiving Ever

November 17, 2016 / San Francisco

The central hub of northern California, San Francisco feels so right for its famous landmarks and attractions, steep and rolling hills, and of course, that famous fog that Fog City is known for. There’s something about this town that makes you want to leave your heart there, so take heart—and take advantage of these special Thanksgiving happenings. Uber in San Francisco, from uberX and uberXL to premium UberBLACK and UberSUV, can take you there with just one tap of the app.

Start a Pet Project

Celebrate the adoption of 8,700 pets so far on the 30th anniversary of the San Francisco SPCA and Macy’s Union Square Holiday Windows, where between 200 and 300 pets find new homes each year. Take a break from holiday shopping to connect with your new best friend, a cat or dog that promises to provide happiness long after that last gift is unwrapped. Meows and barks will deck the halls—and windows—from November 18 through January 2. Go inside to the Level 1 Adoption Center to have a personal pet meet-and-greet but if you’re not in the market for a pet, you can feel free to donate to the SPCA instead.

Enjoy a Bright Light Night

Speaking of Macy’s, don’t miss the 27th Annual Great Tree Lighting on November 25 at 6pm. You’ll marvel at the gorgeous and glamorous 83-foot tree and its 33,000 energy-efficient lights. Head for Union Square Park across from the store and celebrate the holidays with multiplatinum musician and songwriter Aloe Blacc, the San Francisco Boys Chorus, Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, and the cast of San Francisco Playhouse’s “She Loves Me.” Of course, there will also be a visit from Santa. Have you been good this year?

Un-Thanksgiving

For a different kind of Thanksgiving, get up early and do Un-Thanksgiving to commemorate the 1979–1971 occupation of Alcatraz Island by the “Indians of All Tribes.” Also called The Indigenous People’s Sunrise Ceremony, this event, which includes singing and dancing, has been a San Francisco tradition since 1975. It’s so popular that you’re advised to buy boat tickets online for departures, which are every 15 minutes from Pier 33 between 4:15am and 6:15am. The last return departure is 8:45am. Note that Alcatraz Island does not give their usual tours that day.

See It Your Way on a Segway

If you’ve always wanted to two-wheel around town on a Segway Personal Transporter, this fall is a perfect chance to try one out. Get charged up for this outing and Uber over to an Electric Tour Company meet-up location to board your Segway. Glide and ride to Fisherman’s Wharf and the Waterfront, Golden Gate Park, or if you’re a pro, you can steer the Advanced Hills and Crooked Street tours. They’re even open on Thanksgiving Day too, so roll on.
