One of the best times of the year to be in Phoenix? Right now. Perfect weather and of course—Spring Training.
The entire month of March is filled with games happening every day and at all times. While we get that baseball is cool and everything, there are tons of other things to do and explore in the greater Phoenix area. Turn your weekend into an experience more than baseball.
Whether it’s a weekend trip or a month-long visit, here are some things to do.
Day 1
Afternoon:
Enjoy baseball—that’s the real reason you’re here, right?
Night:
If you’re in Tempe…
- Dinner is a must after a day in the sun. Try Postino Annex for delicious Italian food and wine by the bottle. Pro tip: Permitting good weather, the patio is a perfect place to enjoy an Arizona sunset.
- Venture west to Mill Avenue. The party scene might not be yours, but, the people watching and various shops are sure to entertain.
If you’re in Scottsdale…
- Check out the Old Town area. You’re sure to find a restaurant perfect for the occasion.
- Post-dinner, let the fun begin. You can stay in the Old Town area and create a night for the record books (or Snapchat story).
If you’re in Phoenix…
- Don’t even think twice—get dinner at The Vig. It’s right in the downtown area, the food is delicious, and you’re sure to enjoy their outdoor bar and seating area, complete with yard games.
- Looking for drinks after? Try Cobra Arcade Bar for a new spin on a night out, and play arcade games just like you did as a kid.
Day 2
Morning:
If you’re in Tempe…
- Take a walk or jog around Tempe Town Lake. If you’re an early riser, where better to watch the sunrise?
- Settle in for brunch at Snooze: an AM Eatery. You won’t regret it. Arrive early or call ahead—this place, located on ASU’s campus, fills up extra quickly on weekend mornings. Oh, and might we recommend the Pineapple Upside Down Pancakes?
If you’re in Scottsdale…
- Don’t forget to get outside and get your workout on. One of the most popular places to hike, yep—even Carrie Underwood did it when she was in town, is Camelback Mountain. The elevation is just above 2,700 feet. Spend the whole morning here or get up and get it done quick. Just enter “Cholla Trailhead Camelback Mountain” into your Uber app for a safe ride right to the base.
- By now, you’ll have worked up quite the appetite, and luckily, a small yummy cafe isn’t far away. D’Lite Healthy On The Go will have you feeling post-hike healthy and the coffee will be a hit for everyone on the adventure.
If you’re in Phoenix…
- The streets of downtown are extra quiet on weekend mornings. Enjoy them with a nice stroll to Civic Space Park on Central Avenue or explore the city with a run. You’ll find some of the best street art and hidden treasures.
- The Breakfast Club at CityScape is a delicious stop to fill up for the day. The menu is widespread and the outdoor seating area will make you feel like you’re living the downtowner life.
Afternoon:
If you insist, enjoy another baseball game.
Night:
If you’re in Tempe…
- You can spend a whole night exploring the Mill Avenue area again, or head over to Tempe Marketplace for dinner and some shopping.
- Dessert, you might ask? Yes—when in Tempe, you must try a Baked Bear ice cream sandwich. Just an ice cream sandwich? Oh no. This is a gigantic-melt-in-your-mouth-and-make-you-dance ice cream sandwich. Oh, but you don’t like cookies? Not to worry—have your ice cream between a brownie or even a donut.
If you’re in Scottsdale…
- Scottsdale Fashion Square will suit all of your shopping needs (and then some) and there are tons of great restaurants surrounding the area to try. Culinary Dropout is right across the street and can keep you there all night.
- If you’re looking for dessert, you’re in the right place. Right next to Scottsdale Fashion Square is Sprinkles Cupcakes. Again, this isn’t your typical cupcake. It’s likely the best cupcake you’ve ever had. And if it’s late at night, oh, don’t worry, Sprinkles has a cupcake ATM and your mind will be blown.
If you’re in Phoenix…
- Get your fiesta on! Taco Guild is set in an old church, and beyond the delicious food, the bar is sure to get you grooving. An incredible gastropub-like setting and lots of fun, with live music or DJs on most weekend nights.
Day 3
Morning:
If you’re in Tempe…
- Trying to keep fit on your vacation? And probably trying to have fun, too! Try Pary On A Bike spin class at The Madison. It’s usually best to pre-register online, but sometimes spots are available morning-of, too. This fun workout features blasting music, lighting to go along with it, and an upbeat instructor.
- Try a Fractured Prune donut or espresso from Royal Coffee Bar. All the coffee is great, but the chai is something you won’t forget anytime soon.
If you’re in Scottsdale…
- You just gotta brunch. No matter what day of the week it is, consider this your Sunday funday. Scottsdale will have you wanting lots more Sunday fundays from the patios and hotspots you find. Old Town and Scottsdale Road are both places to find a poppin’ spot. If you end up missing your flight, don’t blame us—you’ll be glad you stayed.
- Remember to take in some pool time. This is likely the warmest weather you’ve been in for a few months, and we all know summer is right around the corner, so do us all a favor and get your tan on.
If you’re in Phoenix…
- There are tons of local cafes scattered throughout the downtown area. Some local favorites include Fair Trade Cafe, Cartel Coffee Lab, and Jobot. The big city feel combined with the local coffee shop vibes will have you hoping you can stay.
- Discover the local street art. It’s spread from one end of the city to another, and to help you find art that speaks to you, check out this Phoenix New Times article.
With these tips, you’ll be leaving the desert full of food, tired of baseball, hopefully a little tanner, and likely a lot more relaxed. It’ll be worth it, we promise.
If you’re looking for information on how to get to and from the various Spring Training stadiums around the valley, or the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, we have you covered.
Enjoy the visit!
