Through conversations with drivers and riders, we’ve learned that Uber Black is not always the premium experience it’s expected to be. To improve the experience, make it more consistent, and help differentiate Uber Black from other options, we’re making changes. These changes include investing in marketing efforts to help increase trips, making product improvements, and updating eligibility criteria to raise the bar on quality.
We started rolling out new car and rating criteria on January 2. Those changes are now coming to the Philadelphia service area. Starting May 1, 2019, drivers on Black and Black SUV will need to meet the following criteria:
- Keep a star rating of 4.85 or higher (check out tips from drivers on how to improve your rating)
- Drive a car that’s listed below (keep scrolling)
Drivers are also required to complete a new background check every year through our third-party vendor (in addition to their initial background check and any screening processes performed by licensing authorities).
Drivers who pass a background check but do not meet the Uber Black car and star rating criteria will remain eligible for UberX and/or UberXL trips after May 1, 2019.
- Eligible until September 2, 2019
- Eligible until January 1, 2020
- Vehicles eligible to be onboarded to Uber Black and Black SUV
Improvements on the way
Over the coming months, you’ll get more details on how we’re improving and redesigning the Uber Black experience for drivers and riders.
