If 2018 is the year you will be taking that promised bite of the Apple, you will want to be sure you don’t miss any of the highlights. New York City is one of the world’s great cities, with an infinite choice of attractions. To make it a little less daunting, a 2017 Uber trip data report identified the city’s most popular bar, restaurant, landmark, attraction, park, entertainment, and shopping destinations. The New York highlights list makes a handy reference for your trip to NYC.

Top destinations in NYC

Restaurant | Catch

Still a favorite New York restaurant for superb seafood and celebrity-spotting, Catch is into its eighth year of operation and remains a city landmark. The Catch chefs take classic seafood recipes from around the world and give them a contemporary spin. The décor is chic but relaxed, with an open kitchen and service on three levels, including an elegant rooftop space offering al fresco dining with great views of the iconic city skyline.

Where: 21 9th Ave, New York, NY

Bar | 1 Oak

Another popular celebrity hangout, 1 Oak, or One Of A Kind, is a stylish club and lounge in the heart of Chelsea. It’s an elegant and sophisticated space that has outlasted countless nightlife rivals with a simple formula of world-famous DJ sessions, superb service, and a relaxed vibe. The famous mix with local music, arts, and fashion scenesters in a place with an amiable atmosphere where the accent is on celebration rather than striking a pose.

Where: 453 W 17th St, New York, NY

Landmark | Times Square

Still the place to head for a first impression of New York at night, with the teeming crowds, flickering neon, and streams of yellow cabs. Old-timers will tell you that the neighborhood has been sanitized and tamed, but tourists are still flocking to the square for that distinctive Manhattan thrill. There are regular events on the square including food and craft markets and a midnight digital art show.

Where: Broadway and 7th Ave, New York, NY

Attraction | Rockefeller Center

Famous for the holiday season ice rink, the Rockefeller Center has plenty to offer throughout the year. Head for the observation deck on Top of the Rock for fabulous Manhattan vistas. Take a tour through classic American TV at NBC Studios, or enjoy the airy walkways and beautiful floral displays of the Channel Gardens.  Brunch at the Brasserie is a favorite meeting place for New Yorkers and visitors alike.

Entertainment venue | Barclays Center

Brooklyn’s versatile events arena in Pacific Park hosts NBA basketball games with the Brooklyn Nets and the NHL hockey exploits of the New York Islanders, along with top boxing bouts and the occasional wrestling showcase. It’s also a useful addition to the New York live music scene, staging major shows by touring artists and local Brooklyn hip-hop stars.

Park | Battery Park

The 25-acre public park on the southern tip of Manhattan has been developed and nurtured into a valuable expanse of green space for the city. Now it’s a civilized oasis, with fabulous views over to Liberty and the harbor, lush perennial gardens, a city farm, children’s carousels, and tree-lined bike trails. Occasional guided walks through the park introduce visitors to the Battery’s diverse birds and wildlife.

Shopping | Queens Center Mall

When the Manhattan tourist shopping opportunities have begun to pall, head out to Queens for the authentic New Yorker retail experience. This massive mall has some upscale names like the Armani Exchange store and the Godiva chocolatier, but mostly it’s about the bargains. Flex the credit card and indulge in a little gift shopping for the folks back home. The food hall offers the chance to refuel in-between browsing the rails.

Still one of the world’s great city break options, New York City promises the visitor an unforgettable combination of iconic sights and thrilling experiences. From Times Square to the Battery, Brooklyn to Queens, the city that never sleeps is your dream destination.
