In May 2011, we arrived in New York City. By July 2012, drivers and riders had taken 10,000 trips together. In May 2013, we hit 1 million trips. And on August 1, 2016, a short drive in midtown Manhattan marked the 100 millionth Uber trip in New York City.
That’s 100 million family excursions to the Bronx Zoo, early morning trips to JFK, rides home with heavy bags from Fairway, and—in at least one instance—trips to the hospital featuring an early arrival.
The 100 millionth trip was a regular errand in New York City. Caroline, a fashion buyer from Dallas, was at a trade show at the Javits Center to plan an order for her e-commerce company. When it was time for her to head back to her Midtown hotel, Yoselis—a Brooklyn resident—was there to take her home in comfort.
To celebrate our 100 millionth trip, we’re gifting Caroline a year of Uber rides and Yoselis a Samsung tablet and car mount, a $1,000 Amex gift card, and $500 in Uber credit. Both Caroline and Yoselis plan to use their respective prizes for travel—the former for work and the latter for pleasure.
As a fashion buyer, Caroline’s career brings her to many cities throughout the year, including Washington, DC, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and—of course—New York. For her, Uber is the easiest, most efficient way to get around without her car.
Yoselis, a new mother, is saving up to take her 2-month-old son to the Dominican Republic to to meet his grandparents for the first time. She plans to use a portion of her gift card for the flight. “A friend told me to start driving for Uber because of the opportunity to make money, but I’ve also met a lot of cool people and heard a lot of interesting stories,” Yoselis said. “Every day is a little different.”
Life-long New Yorkers and those just passing through make up a community of people who’ve taken trips No. 1 through 100 million. We’re proud to connect people from different places and backgrounds through the power of technology. Here’s the next 100 million!
