At Uber, we strive to create transportation options that fit everyone’s needs. Today, Uber New Orleans is introducing uberASSIST – a new option designed to provide additional assistance for members of the community with different accessibility needs, including those who may just feel more comfortable with an extra hand when getting from A to B. With uberASSIST, riders can enjoy safe, reliable transportation from uberX driver-partners who’ve been instructed on safety requirements for those with accessibility needs.
With the support of members of the community, uberASSIST will help extend Uber’s mission to help people get around their city safely and conveniently.
Councilmember Jared Brossett, District D, Chair of the Transportation and Airport Committee said, “When rideshare came to New Orleans, it was important to me that the service meaningfully expand accessible transportation options. So, I am very happy to see Uber taking this step with uberASSIST.”
Marla Chirdon, Director of Community Services, New Orleans Council on Aging (NOCOA) said, “Part of our organization’s mission is to support the elderly and disabled by generating opportunities for self-reliance and independence and link them with quality, supportive services. Uber reflects this kind of support and leads the way in creating accessible, inclusive, and affordable transportation options for the disabled and older adult populations.”
Kerrie Ramsdell, Assistant Professor, LSU Health Science Center Department of Occupational Therapy said, “Participation in social and community life is what makes life fun and interesting. Affordable and reliable accessible transportation allows people to engage in education, employment, healthcare, and other community life opportunities that enable independent living. By having varied transportation options, like uberASSIST, all people can live life to its fullest by engaging in meaningful and valued activities, which in turn impact our overall health and quality of life.”
WHAT IS uberASSIST?
uberASSIST expands our accessibility services for riders. Driver-partners are trained to assist riders into vehicles, and can accommodate folding wheelchairs, walkers, and scooters. (Note: uberASSIST vehicles do not have accessible ramps or lifts.)
HOW IT WORKS:
- Open your Uber app
- Slide over to “ASSIST” in the lower section of your screen
- Set your pickup location and request your ride! uberASSIST operates at uberX prices
We were honored to have Marla Chirdon, Director of Community Services for the New Orleans Council on Aging, take the first ride with uberASSIST. Marla has been a relentless advocate for senior citizens in New Orleans. A regular Uber user, Marla received a ride from work from one of our top uberX and now uberASSIST partners, George Wilhelm.
