Boston is a hub of activity in the summer, and July is a particularly busy month in the capital city. Here are a handful of fun events to check out in Boston this year.

What to do in July in Boston

1. Harborfest

Harborfest is Boston’s gigantic Independence Day festival, the biggest of its kind in the nation. This 3-day extravaganza features scores of activities and over 200 events, ranging from historical tours, talks, and reenactments to live entertainment, games, and fireworks. Many Harborfest events are free, with the other paid events typically costing very little. 

When: June 30 to July 2
Where: Various locations, including Historic Downtown and Downtown Waterfront.

2. Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular

One of the most loved annual events in Boston, the free Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, takes place on the Esplanade along the banks of the Charles River. This year, Andy Grammer and Melissa Etheridge headline the pre-fireworks concert, along with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops. Come nightfall, half a million revelers ooh and aah as fireworks explode in the sky above the river, reflected back in the water for a doubly dazzling display. 

When: July 3, 8:30pm to 10pm and July 4, 7pm to 11pm

3. New Kids on the Block, Paula Abdul, & Boyz II Men at Fenway Park

You’ll feel like you died and went to Pop Heaven as 3 epic acts take the stage at famed Fenway Park this July 8. Boyz II Men and Paula Abdul will get you moving, grooving, and primed for the headlining act. The New Kids on the Block, the local boy-band sensation that lit up the nation in the late 80s and early 90s, will walk you down memory lane with hits like “Please Don’t Go Girl” and I’ll Be Loving You (Forever).” Tickets are selling like hotcakes, so reserve your spot now.

4. Boston Harbor Hotel’s Summer in the City

Bostonians love summer, and the Summer in the City Series is just one of many reasons why. Kick back and enjoy free live music and movies under the stars throughout July, courtesy of the famed Boston Harbor Hotel. Musicians perform on the Blues Barge on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. On Friday afternoons, live music entertains you before Movies by Moonlight begin at nightfall. This year, the featured movies in July are Captain America, The Notebook, Cheaper by the Dozen, and The Little Mermaid. The movie starts at sundown – around 8:15pm.

5. Shakespeare on the Common

Whether you’re a literature professor or the closest you’ve come to Shakespeare is watching Ten Things I Hate About You, you’ll be highly entertained and moved by Commonwealth Shakespeare Company’s performance of Romeo & Juliet, the most famous romantic tragedy in human history. Bring something to sit on and a basket of treats, and settle in for some stellar free entertainment.

6. 14th Annual Revere Beach International Sand Sculpting Festival

Incredible and unimaginable sand sculptures will dot the landscape during this popular sand sculpting festival. From Friday, July 21 through Sunday, July 23, you can see these ephemeral sculptures before they’re washed away by the surf. Watch the sculptors in action and enjoy their creations, ranging from whimsical to architectural.
