Update: The Austin PRIDE Parade, originally taking place in August, has been rescheduled for Saturday, September 30.

Austin is positively gorgeous in September when cooler weather prevails and big, sunny skies invite you out for some Texas-sized fun. This year finds Austin bursting with all sorts of festivals and fiestas featuring music, film, art, and—of course—beer. So get with your friends, and make plans now to enjoy September in the city for some serious fun served up Lone Star-style.  


What to do in Austin this September


1. Enjoy the races at the Pirelli World Challenge

If you’re in the mood to rev it up, The Pirelli World Challenge is a fast-paced, thrilling sprint racing competition featuring production-based cars from famous manufacturers like Bentley, Ferrari, and Cadillac. Speed and sound collide for two full days of riveting sports car racing. See the cars up close, and get an earful of engine revving in the paddock, where you can also converse with the drivers and crews.

2. Get your groove on at the Austin Music Video Festival

For five solid days in September, the Austin Music Video Festival will keep you entertained with scores of music videos shown on the big screen. Rub elbows with cinematic celebrities at world premiers, get wowed by fascinating virtual reality encounters, and shake a leg at a number of shindigs and soirees—all culminating in an exciting awards show. This year’s video lineup includes goodies from The Flaming Lips, Spike Jonze, Pussy Riot, Black Joe Lewis, and Nickelback, among a multitude of others.

3. Rev your engines at the Lone Star LeMans

If you can’t get enough of the roar of engines and the smell of gasoline and rubber, the Lone Star LeMans offers six action-packed hours of sprint car racing, featuring the cars and stars that go head-to-head in the Le Mans 24 Hour Classic. You’ll have access to drivers and their teams in an open paddock, and you can walk the grid before the gentlemen start their engines.

4. Watch your new favorite films at Fantastic Fest

If cinema is your thing, you’ll get your fill at Fantastic Fest, a film festival featuring horror, fantasy, sci-fi, and action movies from all over the world. In years past, the likes of Tim Burton, Robert Rodriguez, Bill Murray, and Ryan Reynolds have been on-hand to give talks and mingle with film-enthusiasts. Variety includes Fantastic Fest on its list of “10 Film Festivals We Love,” putting it in the company of Cannes, Toronto, and Telluride. Enjoy screenings, parties, talks, and other activities during this eight-day festival.

5. Peruse the arts and crafts at the Pecan Street Festival

Now in its 37th year, the Pecan Street Festival is one of the biggest and longest-running arts, crafts, and music festivals in the nation. Free and open to the public, this festival features an abundance of vendors from all over the world showcasing and pitching their one-of-a-kind wares. A stellar musical lineup will get you moving and grooving, and plenty of food and beverages are to be had along the stretch of Sixth St that the festival calls home.

6. Celebrate the German in you at AustOberfest

Uber is the official ride of AustOberfest, a daylong celebration of Central Texas German heritage. The bier will be flowing and the sausages grilling to perfection, thanks to some of Central Texas’ favorite purveyors of meat—including Stiles Switch, Southside Market, Hoovers, and LeRoy and Lewis. Enjoy Texas German bier tastings, bowling, live entertainment including headliner Brave Combo, and competitions like the Air Accordion Contest and the David Hasselhoff Lip-Sync Competition.

7. Sample the suds at the Texas Craft Brewers Festival

Billed as the “Greatest Showcase of Texas Craft Beer EVER,” the Texas Craft Brewer’s Festival is the state’s biggest beer event and focuses entirely on craft beers produced in the Lone Star State. Sample the wares of over 65 Texas craft breweries, adding up to nearly 200 handcrafted beers to taste. Artisans will show off their creations, and live music will provide a soundtrack as you sample the state’s best suds.
