5 standout Austin events and places to experience this fall

September 16, 2017 / Austin

Austin may just be the hippest capital city in the nation, with its famed live music scene, tight-knit food truck community, and penchant for public art. This September, grab your friends and hit the streets or countryside for some big-as-Texas fall fun. Here are some activities to get you started.

1. Hang out in the Walburg German Restaurant Biergarten

The enormous, tree-dotted Biergarten at Walburg German Restaurant opens every Friday and Saturday at 6pm. Come early, and stake a claim to a picnic table or a spot at one of the long family-style tables that fill up quickly beneath the giant blue and white striped tent. Live music keeps things festive all night long as you fill up on German bier and snacks from the biergarten kitchen. There’s never a cover and it’s always a good time with good friends.

When: Fri – Sat, 6pm – 10pm
Where: 3777 FM 972, Walburg, TX

2. Fredericksburg Oktoberfest

Downtown Fredericksburg becomes a thriving German village during Oktoberfest. There’s fun to be had for everyone in the family, with a children’s area, stages with live music, vendors galore, and lots of special events. OkTubaFest on Friday is a large gathering tuba players who serenade new arrivals at the front gate. On Saturday, sign up for the Hauptstrasse Chicken Dance, and on Sunday, register for the 42 tournament featuring prizes for first, second, and third place.

When: October 6 – 8
Where: 100 W Main St, Fredericksburg, TX

3. Austin City Limits Music Festival

Austin City Limits is an esteemed institution in the capital city, and the Austin City Limits Music Festival is a 3-day celebration of live music featuring an all-star talent lineup, including The Killers, The Growlers, Gorillaz, Ryan Adams, Chance the Rapper, Ice Cube, Spoon, Solange, and Jay-Z, to name just a scant few. Local restaurants and food trucks serve up everything from fried turkey legs to vegan tacos at the ACL Eats Food Court, and activities abound around the park, including arts and crafts vendors, art installations, a beer hall, and kids’ activities.

When: October 6 – 8 and 13 – 15, 11am – 10 pm daily
Where: Zilker Park, 2100 Barton Springs Rd

4. Sweet Berry Farm

Leave the city behind, and embark on a fall adventure at Sweet Berry Farm, where you can pick your own pumpkins and flowers and get in on all sorts of activities. Go on an old-fashioned hay rack ride, navigate the Texas Maze or the Candy Corn Kid Maze, paint a pumpkin, stuff a scarecrow, jump for joy at the Berry Bounce, or take a ride on the Sweet Berry Express Barrel Train. Show up on a weekend for horse rides and lunch at The Pumpkin Grill, serving up grilled corn, hot dogs, and PB&Js.

When: Mon – Tue and Thu – Sat, 8:30am – 5:30pm; Sun 1pm – 5pm
Where: 1801 FM 1980, Marble Falls, TX

5. Barton Hill Farms

Another country adventure takes you to Barton Hill Farms, which features a 5-acre corn maze and live country and bluegrass music every day. Pick your own pumpkin, bounce on the giant Jumping Pillow, play old-fashioned yard games, and ride the Grain Train. Once you work up an appetite, visit the Last Chance Diner for a hot dog or kettle corn, or stop at the El Cruz Ranch food truck for authentic Mexican food.

When: Saturday, 10am – 8pm; Sunday, 10am – 6pm
Where: 1115 Farms to Market 969, Bastrop, TX
