Hey there is a Dylan fest on the 24 in hibbing, MN too! they say it's his home town but im pretty sure he just graduated there and lived there for like a year and a half and then left for like sunset strip...could be totally wrong though!
The psych-country goodness that is the Beachwood Sparks are reuniting this fall at the Sunset Junction Street Fair in Los Angeles (Silverlake)! While they never technically broke up, they have been inactive since their 2003 Sub Pop release, Once We Were Trees. The festival is taking place August 23-24 and Broken Social Scene, Cold War Kids and the Black Keys are all set to play.
According to the Los Angeles Times, it is unlikely that Farmer Dave Scher will be joining the Sparks at the reunion show because he is currently on tour playing keyboards for Interpol. They suggested that the lineup would look something like this: Rademaker (vocals/bass), Gunst (vocals/guitar), Aaron Sperske (drums), Jen Cohen Gunst (Gunst’s wife, on keys), Ben Knight (guitar) and Dan Horne (pedal steel).
Beachwood Sparks- Canyon Ride (Live in a backyard)
They are also planning on heading back into the studio this winter and working on a new record. I saw the Sparks once back in 2001 or 2002 and have been dreaming about seeing them again ever since. In my humble opinion, we all need a little more Sparks in our lives.
Our mixtape this week focuses on the precious metals, silver and gold (sorry platinum!). It features tunes by Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, Fleetwood Mac and more. Check it out after the jump and let us know what you think.
Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney of the Black Keys return for a new album that delivers on the roots of this duo's true-blues sound, all the while developing a new depth of composition and production. It's the best of both worlds: Keys fans will dig the integrity of this album as a logical follow-up to 2002's thickfreakness and 2004's Rubber Factory, but also appreciate a depth and soul of sound not found on their tightly-structured previous efforts. (continued after the jump)
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci (pronounced Monkey) was a Welsh experimental folk-pop group that formed in 1991 and broke up in 1996. They sang both in English and Welsh and have one album called the Blue Trees that is pretty near close to perfection as far as albums go. I couldn't find any videos of that mellow, Welsh folk based masterpiece, so am presenting two other solid tunes here.
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci- Pentref Wrth Y Mor
A side note: The legendary John Peel was a huge supporter of the band and would often play their music on BBC1, even though Welsh language music very rarely appeared on the station.
Howard Stern recently took some recordings of Dolly Parton speaking and electronically pieced them together to have her saying some incredibly racist, raunchy, and very un-Dollylike things, including the statement "Kenny Rogers loves to piss inside little boys' assholes." You can hear the recording above.
Dolly fired back in a statement yesterday and said: "I have never been so shocked, hurt and humiliated in all my life. I cannot believe what Howard Stern has done to me. In a blue million years I would never have such vulgar things come out of my mouth. They have done editing or some sort of trickery to make this horrible horrible thing. Please accept my apology for them and certainly know I had nothing to do with this. If there was ever going to be a lawsuit, it's going to be over this. Just wanted you to know that I am completely devastated by this."
The Righteous Brothers- You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'
This Phil Spector produced track was a number one hit single in 1965. A little known fact about is that a very young Cher was actually amongst the backup singers on the song's crescendo. Check out some other attempts (to varying degrees of success) of the tune after the jump, including versions by Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra, Dolly Parton and Neil Diamond and Elvis! Also included is a live version of the guys singing it. The moment when Bobby Hatfield hits those high notes in the bridge (after basically having to wait the whole song to do anything) always sends shivers down my spine.
Naturalismo Presents: Vetiver live at the Troubadour
The fine folks over at Naturalismo were also at the Vetiver show last Wednesday night and had the chance to sit down with Andy Cabic. They spoke about the inspiration behind Vetiver's new covers record, Things of the Past, which was released yesterday as well as captured some great footage of an unreleased song "Another Reason To Go." Check it out above and be sure to head over and say hello to Naturalismo, a very fine blog indeed.
Just one week before his 90th Birthday, we bow our heads to the dearly departed Eddy Arnold. He passed away on May 8, 2008 in Franklin, Tennessee.
Since his radio debut in 1936, the Tennessee Plowboy has graced both country and mainstream audiences with his natural singing talent. Withstanding the rise of glitter, glitz and honky tonk in the country scene, modestly attired Arnold and his sophisticated baritone stood out and earned him 147 singles on the charts, including 28 No. 1 country singles on the Billboard charts.
Born Richard Edward Arnold, the singer learned life lessons all too young after the loss of his father at age 11 and the foreclosure of the family farm. He grew up struggling to build a career and support his family, hoping to succeed and never relive those hard times.
Eddy with Elvis
Over the course of his career, Arnold collaborated with greats like Roy Higgins, Bob Moore, and Chet Atkins. He was one of the first 10 people inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and CMA's very first Entertainer of the Year.
Eddy Arnold- The Cattle Call
He will surely be missed but his legacy lives on in songs like "the Cattle Call" and "Make the World Go Away", both of which have become country standards and have been covered by the likes of Elvis, Johnny Cash and more. Rest in Peace Eddy Arnold.
Eddy Arnold- Make the World Go Away (Original Recording from 1965)
These guys need no explanation. First song is from their studio in Woodstock. Second is from the amazing documentary Festival Express. Both are from 1970.
The video for the first single off of Langhorne Slim's self titled album has just been released. It's a beautifully shot film with rich colors and interesting situations (tuba playing in a bathroom stall?). Slim will be playing in Los Angeles tomorrow night at the Troubadour. We are hoping to make it over there to check out this super talented guy.
My style find of the weekend was a line of jewelry that they were selling over at Pretty Penny. The line is called Feather Witch and it's made by a couple out of Oakland. They use mostly vintage beads and get their feathers from a man who uses them for Native American ceremonials outfits. They claim that they were "crafted with love by a couple that spends too much time doing their hair and listening to Fleetwood Mac." Sounds good to me!
Hair clips/headbands
Feather Witch also has an online store over at Etsy. You can check it out by clicking here. If anyone is looking for a present for me anytime soon, the earrings below will suffice...wink wink.
In bizarre music news, a biologist at East Carolina University has named a new species of spider after Neil Young. He discovered the spider last year in Alabama and decided to name it "Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi" because he loves Young's music and respects his work as a peace activist. To read more about the spider, click here. In honor of Young's spidey achievement, check out this video of him from 1970.
Thanks to Benny Kelly for throwing an awesome Craft Party yesterday! I was honored to have been invited and had an amazing time djing. We are talking about maybe taking this Crafting Party on the road so keep your eyes and ears open for events in LA and NYC! Thank you also to Pretty Penny for hosting the event. They have so much amazing western inspired wear (cowboy boots, jewelry, dresses, etc). If I lived here, that store would definitely be my financial downfall. Bay Area kids, seriously check it out.
