The sad thing is, I'm totally guilty of doing this. A few month's back I did a job for free. I shot an interior of a single room (set up lights everything). On the promise that I'd get future work of the rest of the building. It took about two hours to do including computer time. Stupid stupid stupid. Needless to say they got other poor saps part timers/students,to do it for nothing.
Even with my lesson learned I was talking to another company about shooting interiors, these jokers. Anyway I offered them far less then my going rate just to get work. They then rang me back telling me they got a Polish photographer that will do it for half of what I offered, which in turn was half of what a commercial photographer should charge in the first place.
My phone conversation involved telling him his companys photography is shit, I'd bring some respectability to it. Considering these ass holes used to rent sound equipment till digital made every ass hole a photographer. Needless to say he hung up mid way through my rant.
This guy sums it up pretty well. Actors, musicians, photographer, writers they all have much in common.
It's just been my first year as a working photographer, and I earn less than minimum wage. If I packed groceries in my local supermarket, I'd earn more money.
Anyway a new web site, marketing plan will be up in a few weeks. See how it goes.
I just read this man, it fucking pisses me off when people bullshit you like that. It's hard enough trying to make a living as a creative these days, what with all the competition and the like. When people lie to you as in your case it just adds insult to injury. I'm currently wanting to try doing paid work but shit like this keeps making me think twice. You've got the talent man, it'll happen eventually. To quote Al Pacino in Heat "DON'T WASTE MY MUTHAFUKKIN TIME". Said in a very loud voice.
I'm working a 3rd shift job getting paid $9.50 an hour and I work about 33 hours a week. I owe $25,000 in education bills and I get 0 job offers due to me being a fine art photographer. People LOVE my art but no one buys it. If only complements paid bills right?

Thanks for sharing that one seamus.. I can relate to the plight, I keep getting alot of gigs, but.. free.. and the people i tell to pay me, well, they dont happen to want to spend any money.. Damn bands. At least im on the payroll with one band already.. Much luck to you
It's been a while. Just been doing some catching up. Great to see your new stuff (well, what photobucket hasn't fucked up)! Good to see the M6 is treating you well and have a great trip mate!
Hi Seamus Just found your blog via Chris. You've got some really great stuff going on here. I look forward to spending some time catching up. Cheers Mark
Nice page Treamus, Please click on the CASSETTE displayed on my page to listen to the music. Thats me signing and rapping on the first song. I also produced and wrote it. Strange enough, my EX-GIRLFRIEND's brother played the guitar. Things that I mentioned in the song came to pass in real life. Please listen to get the full STORY. I wrote the song but didnt think what I happened to simply create out of exploration of the art would actually happen to me.Please don't forget to VOTE. Over and Out. C.R.I.$.I.$.
overall enjoyed your photos, great eye! I hope I didnt overload you with comments, but when I see something I like I like to let people I know I appreciate...and then I go on to another picture....and i like that one too....
Happy to find you here! By the way don’t listen to that double chined bitch curator. Your photography rocks...you just haven’t met the person who understands it yet. Personally I like your style, I feel like its a window through your eyes. Cheers!
I really enjoy your work. Very casually, circumstantial and comical, it does have meaning! Much to the eye of the interpreter, wonderful. Unfortunately I have crossed over to the dark side of DSLR's and I haven't really gotten the swing of it yet. I think I need to get my ass out of the exhaustingly blah, US and hug my film camera close again.
I really really enjoyed looking at your photos. I don't know what those so-called "curators" were thinking, but your work certainly has depth, humour and grit. Keep at it
