With little more than a fresh attitude, a great song and a cheap video, The Pack, four teens from Berkeley, California, went from unknowns to rap royalty in months. The song was a catchy song about their Vans; their video was downloaded by millions of people -- more than 17 million, to be exact -- on MySpace and YouTube and, like a god from the skies, none other than rapper Too $hort was courting Young L, Lil Uno, Stunna and Lil B. By the time the year was out, The Pack had a number one video on YouTube and "Vans" was chosen as the fifth best song of 2006 by Rolling Stone magazine.
Spin felt the same way. As they pointed out in one of their breakout spotlights, Vans are “old school kicks that are punk rock shoes” because they get “real dirty.” They come in colors like coke whites, and “slip in and out real easy like blunts.” Who can resist them? And, with lyrics like “Soul kinda thick like a big booty chick” and "Lace 'em past the fourth hole, you some type of sucker," who can resist the song?
For the Pack, though, it's pretty much business as usual. They come from the East Bay underground hip-hop scene, which gives high points for wit, charisma and resourcefulness. So when "Vans" landed them a Jive record contract, the Pack (who were initially called The Wolfpack, a name that was evidently dropped because there were already too many Wolfpacks) went into the studio and quickly knocked out a "taste-of-things-to-come EP, Skateboarders 2 Scrapers, which included the song, “I’m Shinin.”
This video had a lot smoother sailing, at least on MTV. In a move that didn't make a whole lot of sense given the high degree of product placement encouraged by MTV, the network refused to air the "Vans" video, which they claimed was a glorified commercial for the shoe company. But they had no such problem with the low budget video for “I’m Shining,” a video never intended to go beyond the Internet’s social networks. Still, it was so popular that MTV had to play it. By the end of the song's run, it was the number one video on MTV2 and their episode of You Hear It First became the most viewed and downloaded episode in MTV.com history. Continuing their domination of the television network, they have gotten more requests for Super Sweet 16 than anyone else, and have already filmed three episodes of the series, including Chris Brown’s special, Super 18.
Now it’s time for them to unleash their debut album, called Based Boys, taken from the name of their self-described genre of music, based music, which essentially is an amalgam of music kids who grow up with one foot in the surf/skate world and one in the hip-hop world, listen to. The 17 tracks of “body moving rhythms” are primarily produced by Young L, but with some help from producers like Mr. Collipark (Bubba Sparks), DJ Speedy (Young Jeezy) and Pit (“Party Like a Rockstar”). Right after the album is released, they are heading out on the road with Gym Class Heroes.”
But, like the stars they’ve become, The Pack have upgraded their modes of transport. Before, they got famous singing about the sneakers they walk around in. Now, the first single from The Pack's new record -- “In My Car.”
