Paula DeAnda has it all together. Barely 18, the Texas singer/songwriter has already had a hit album, been on tour and counts celebrities such as Bow Wow as friends. But that’s just part of her life. When she’s not being Paula DeAnda, celebrity, she still has time to hang out with her family and friends and do “teen” things like go to the mall.
From the beginning, there was never really any doubt as to her career. When she was little, she would grab a hairbrush and pretend it was a microphone. Then, enlisting her cousins as dancers, she would sing songs to whoever would listen. Her enthusiasm and talent convinced her parents to give her piano lessons and to sing at weddings, benefits and other local events. After the entire community of San Angelo, Texas, encouraged her to pursue her dreams, her parents moved the entire family to Corpus Christi, which has a thriving music scene.
Almost before they unpacked, it seemed that she had gotten a manager and recorded a song that became a regional hit. It was enough to get the attention of the A&R department of BMG, who agreed to give her an audition. After meeting with her in the afternoon, she was asked to come back later that afternoon and sing for Clive Davis, the famed head of BMG and the person behind stars such as Whitney Houston, Kelly Clarkson and Alicia Keyes.
Luckily for DeAnda, she was only vaguely aware of his accomplishment because she was nervous enough. Determined to make the most of it, she came back a few hours later, sang a few songs for Davis acapella and impressed Davis with her voice, as well as her songwriting and arranging skills. Signing her, says Davis, was “a no-brainer.” He offered her a deal on the spot.
From there, it didn’t take long to get her into the studio to begin work on her self-titled album. Davis pulled out all the stops for the record, which featured six songs by DeAnda and seven from some of the best songwriters in the world, including Diane Warren, Ne-Yo and Timbaland. They also brought in producers Happy Perez, Mike Aguirre of the Record Breakers and Stargate and singers and rappers like Baby Bash, The DEY, Bow Wow, Lil Wayne, V Nice, Ak'Sent, and P.B.
Reflecting her range, the album includes a smorgasbord of emotions and styles, from ballads and club cuts to soul and rap. Released on August 29, 2006, it has already had several singles culled from it, including “Doing Too Much” and “Walk Away (Remember Me),” featuring hot buzz band The DEY. It will no doubt be followed by the MySpace favorite, "Make 'Em Clap To This," with rapper Ak'sent.
That song, which is more the club friendly, points out another reason why deAnda’s been successful. Unlike some of the other teen-age starlets who’ve not just had club hits but flaunt their ability to use their celebrity status to hit 21-and-over clubs, does not feel the need to speak from experience. She’s still underage so, she admits, she’s not going to the clubs yet. “But,” she smiles, “I can relate to the idea!"
Despite her age, people like Clive Davis are convinced that DeAnda is no flash-in-the-pan. More importantly, she doesn’t think so either. Grounded by her family, her friends and the mall, she’s keeping a cool head, and not trying to make more of this first album than it really is. “I’m still taking everything in,” Paula DeAnda says. “I know this is just the beginning.”
