Canon vs Sony
Sold all my film gear... selling my enlarger soon! If anyone interested let me know!

So...

Going digital..

Canon 40D with the 17-85is usm or Sony a700 with the 17-80???

I would really adore the zeiss lens in the future but I should also probably consider the fact that I can find "used" canon lens for great prices.

Thing is I saw many tests of the cameras and I can't really decide!

Tell me why should I buy one or another??

PS: just scanned the slides from venice!

i've been very happy with my canon gear. sony may emerge as a player but you won't see any notable pros using their gear. zeiss glass or not.

They are both excellent cameras, and you will see Sony emerge as a big player in the photographic industry this year. Try them both, and buy whichever feels the most comfortable. The photos will be great with either camera.

40D, without a doubt. But before you abandon the zoom for one prime, consider a few things. What are you going to be shooting with it? Will one 35mm lens take care of everything you want to shoot? I am the first person to tout the beauty of primes over zooms -- I don't like zooms too much -- but unless you are going to be able to buy more than one prime lens, it might behoove you to start with a zoom and then replace it with primes over time, as you can afford them. Whether you like zooms or not, when you're on a budget, they ensure that you can cover a great many more things with your camera than if only have one prime lens. Think logically.

If you're shooting just for fun, then get whatever you want. But if you are planning on making some sort of living with your camera, buy wisely and get the gear that will make you more versatile for your clients.
