His name is Lloyd Harlin Polite, Jr., but to his fans, just Lloyd will do just fine. The New Orleans born, Atlanta bred R&B singer had just turned 21 when his hit album Street Love had guest like such as Nas, Andre 3000 and Lil’ Wayne; the clubs ate up the single, “Get It, Shawty;” and Lloyd, well, he was just happy to be here, enjoying the love.
Perhaps because he’s no stranger to show business, he’s looking at his success the way a veteran would. He was discovered, after all, when he was 10 by Joyce Irby and asked to become part of the Dreamworks group N-Toon. Although they got to put out two singles, “Ready" and "Shoulda Been My Girl", their album, Toon Time, flopped. Although people blamed the record label, Lloyd saw the failure as a mixed blessing. While he wanted success, he also resented the inability to play sports, make friends and have a normal childhood. At least he could now have that.
His second foray into the record industry ended just as poorly. He got a record deal with MCA Records and recorded a track, “Young Girl,” which people thought would be a perfect single. But before it could get released or he could record supporting tracks for it, MCA was absorbed into Geffen and Lloyd, like many others, found themselves out in the cold, without a deal.
The strength of the single was good enough to get him another contract, this time with The Inc./Def Jam Records. The label paired him with Ashanti, then a hot commodity, and released their duet, “Southside” as a single. It became a hit, and was followed with “Hey Young Girl,” which wasn’t.
The album, Southside, which contained both singles fared a little better. Still, it was not the hit people were hoping for. Lloyd, however, remained philosophical, realizing that the album could be his calling card, an “introduction to the world.” But he also knew it was just a starting point. Having made it to people’s ears, he now” wanted to open their eyes.”
And open their eyes he did. For starters, although he still had a contract with The Inc., he started Sho’nuff Records with his friend, Henny Lee. Then they leaked the single “You” (with versions featuring Lil’ Wayne and Tango Redd) on myspace and to Atlanta radio. With interest building, they then released Street Love in March 2007.
This time around, Lloyd was determined to have a hit. The record thus featured a broader range of tempos and moods, with proud moments for him like his most up-tempo, club friendly single, “Get It Shawty.” The song’s not just infectious, but is his way of telling people “to forget what your friends may think. Forget about going to work. Just get on the dance floor…and “Get It Shawty.’”
Something else that was important to him on this album was that it be more Lloyd, and less about showcasing a lot of other artists, as is currently the case with urban albums that feature an entire roster of guest hosts and producers. On Street Love, so that Lloyd could be heard, he limited the drop-ins to three people he considers legends: Lil’ Wayne, Nas and Andre 3000. “When you have people like Nas and Andre 3000 calling up, I figure you’re doing something right,” says Lloyd.
