this came to me on the Dash as we dashed down sixth on saturday (man, it looked like mexico city.) i wanted to stop and check it out and alas, this list came to me:

no longer able to be

lazy, listless, languishing, lingering, lackadaisical, lounging,

lazing away a _______ afternoon

this is what los angeles has brought me to ten years on. it's not bad.

for new things.

static. limbo. i was describing to someone yesterday about falling into a depression at the end of contraption spell. 3 intense months of work-over in 3 days. i invoke the ghost woman here to get us through these last couple of weeks of "archiving." we're gonna publish a book over at lulu.com of photos and writing about our "modern-day folk rock opera." and it'll include a cd of the acts. title hand-drawn by Jason Meadows.

Spent Thanksgiving weekend in Seattle and in the last hours, trying to cram it all in went to a fellow greener's rad bike shop in the CD, 20/20 Bicycles, http://www.2020cycle.com/. When I walked in, Alex was standing there with a coffee in one hand and a wheel in another and he looked at me and said, "What do you have?" and then in the same tone said, "Oh, shit it's Terry." I said, "Alex! It's Kelly!" He claimed he was discombobulated because it had been a series of folks and free food and he placated me with vegan donuts. That and the groovy hangout area nestled among the frames and stuff for sale worked! Way back in the day we had become friends partly through the bike coop in the basement of the CAB and isn't it nice all these years later to see someone come full circle with gray hair and big smiles, finding a way to make their way locally. Another state, s'more bicycles.

So, today I rode my bike to ICON to drop off 21 4x5's! I've been hoarding them for lack of funds. I had had a "last call for photohol" stint in Elysian Park but it was a bust because it was the first day of daylight savings and no one showed until the sun was gone the way of tomorrow.

The photographs are the portrait.

I've been working on this project for the past year. I use a 4x5 and leave 'em with three questions:

1. Why do you ride

2. How do you ride

3. What do you ride

It seems to function like the friendliest of collisions.

I've been ruminating on the classics:

bikes and cameras.

so far it's working

The irony of this project is twofold:

1.I have to drive to the "subjects" cuz
2.It's all borrowed gear. Even the vehicle

But for these latest four, I had the distinct pleasure of taking the DASH. It's the quarter neighborhood bus that dashes around your neighborhood for the quick trips. I had to lug the camera case and tripod a block from my house to the stop and a pleasant ten minutes later around the backside of angeleno heights I'm dropped off across the street for my first location. No time for donuts or magic gas I hopped an idling bus for another 25 cents to the last stop just past the elementary school that a has a mural and carved sidewalk stories in tribute to a cat Room #9? was it, I can't remember. I hoofed up the tiny hill to trouble JP as she fussed with her freelance muppet vampire makeover. Then back down the hill in the waning sun for a final quarter home. Seventy-five cents of perfection. Only bummer, JP's cut-off wheel. Boo Hoo! I'll have to do it again.

I had a good time at Contraption Spell... though I don't claim to "get it". I am curious to hear what you have to say about it. I've been thinking that someday I want to show you some cool hobo grafitti from the 1910's that's on the underside of a bridge at the LA River. It's done in charcoal and chalk and is holding up really well... You should see it.

Love the series. Perhaps we shall encounter one another on the road as we photograph from our bikes. I'll be on a green Bianchi with a rangefinder. Good portrait of Jimmy. Did he do his police siren sound for you?
