'Kijke kijke nie kope' - is a phrase merchants in many South European and North African countries use when the Dutch scour their market goods, it is Dutch and means 'Looking looking, no buying' It is a mixture between an invitation (come buy my stuff) and an insult (you cheap Dutch, you never buy a thing) Thanks for your comments on my shots, I'll be posting even more the next couple of days!

bollywood and personal statements

hello again.

yes i know, im a terrible person. who's been on holiday and still been too lazy to update. maybe it's just a lack of things happening. interesting things i mean. what's new here... hmmm... i'm trying to decide whether i should volunteer myself for spending a year doing my masters in freezing england or whether i should stay here for year and work. so applications are currently in the offing and for any of you who are thinking of applying anywhere, the personal statement is a bitch.

those who've been through this process.. you know what i'm talking about ;)

i also hope to get back my first role of black and white ever. i don't expect anything spectacular but i hope that i can try and shoot in black and white more often.

i hope that i can shoot more often actually. i've been having a few problems with my camera. it's a old pentax K1000 and my pride and joy. it's the only one i have and my refuge and shelter from the family's little digital camera. but it's mirror has been getting stuck a lot and i keep having to ask someone to help me with it.

im still getting used to all this but a photo blog will come when i:

a) when my camera gets better

b) when i get better at making use of it

other than that, not much. hey.. i want to know something. how many people here have watched a bollywood movie? any bollywood movie. for those of you who aren't sure what that is, bollywood is basically the indian film industry (three points for guessing the origin of the name).

they're hindi films and they're known for being over the top, exaggerated soap operas. im not a big bollywood person myself and im one of the last people to come to for information on hindi films but it's a huge huge industry and there's no way to avoid it here. that's not to say that all of it is nto worth watching.. there are so many that are brilliant. they're just known for trying to fit everything in. romance. comedy. action. and maybe even a death or two ;) and LOTS OF SONG AND DANCE. which is why all hindi (and most indian films in fact) are about 3 hours long. never go without a couple of songs and dance sequences that often have no connection to the plot.

but... they can be entertaining ;)

anyway... so back to the question.. how many of you have ever watched a bollywood film. i recommend at least one for people who like to try watching different things. it's an interesting experience.

and that was my topic for the day. now to work on my personal statement. which im trying desperately to avoid. hope all is well with everyone. bangalore is unusually cold. it's about 14 degrees (celsius) which is probably wonderful during the winter for most of you but for this city.. it's cold!! ta for now!

Ahhh, I don't remember the English titles!! :( And most probably the Greek ones won't make any sense to you, since they always translate them to completely different things!! =p I only remember one that was called something like "It is written in the stars" something like that (the one with an English guy falling in love with an Indian?)

thanks! i'll see if i can find it ... and i'll ask around maybe my friends can recommend something as well!! :)

@banxter - well all of them are usually very cliched but you can try something like 'dil chahta hai'. it's super popular, typical comedy, worth a few laughs. if you've got any indian friends there, (and if you trust their taste) ask them what they recommend!! ;)

@robert - it gets stuck in the up position and yeah.. it's really easy to fix but it keeps happening, especially when im in the middle of a random road and then i can't fix it myself so i have to stop shooting.. i think that that's the most annoying part. what did you watch?? :D i'll try getting those photos back soon :)

@ioanna - haha yea lotsss of colour. and you're right - very cliched. and they have to have a mix of everything. and i mean EVERY SINGLE POSSIBLE THING. hah..
which movies have you watched?

Hehe, I've watched Bollywood movies! :D I like all those colours they have and high contrasts. Although the stories are usually very cliche like Hollywood, they are still nice to watch! :)

Is the mirror in your Camera getting stuck in the up or down position? It may just be out of alignment if it is getting stuck in the up position. A very easy and usually inexpensive problen to have fixed. I have seen a few Bollywood films in the past. I did enjoy them too, my friends were like "What are you waching?" Some of my freinds have no culture at all. Oh?! Can't wait to see your first B&W film shots.

i can't wait to see your first roll of b/w as well!!! that's exciting! good luck with the camera and what's a really good bollywood film you'd recommend?
