Bowling for Soup started with a smirk way back in 1994, when a bunch of guys from Wichita Falls, Texas, started playing around with some instruments, just looking for fun, chasing girls “all the bad guys want.” Now, some seven albums, a Grammy nomination and only one (amicable) personnel change later, the rock band is older, heavier and somewhat wiser. But they’re still a band, and they’re still having a grand ole’ time.
It’s hard not to when you’ve taken your name from an old Steve Martin bit (“Bowling for Shit,” which in turn was a play off the old TV show, Bowling for Dollars). The band, Jaret Reddick (vocals, guitar), Erik Chandler (bass, vocals), Chris Burney (guitar, vocals) and Lance Morril (drums, vocals, replaced in 1998 by Gary Wiseman), relocated en masse to Denton, Texas in 1998, and quickly recorded their first two albums, Rock on Honorable Ones!! and Tell Me When to Whoa!!!, on the local label, FFROE.
These albums brought them to Jive Records’ attention. After signing with Jive, Bowling for Soup went into the studio to record 2000’s Let’s Do It for Johnny, which was made up with re-recordings of songs from the first two records, a few new tracks and a cover of Bryan Adam’s “Summer of ’69.” They followed that two years later with Drunk Enough to Dance, which featured the Butch Walker song, “Girl All the Bad Guys Want,” which became a big hit in the UK and was nominated for a Grammy in the States for Best Pop Performance by a Group or Duo.
Intoxicated on their own success, the band managed to better themselves two years later with A Hangover You Don’t Deserve, which made it into the Top 40, thanks primarily to two hit singles, “1985” and “Almost.” That was followed by 2005’s Bowling for Soup Goes to the Movies, a compilation album of cover songs and soundtrack songs, and 2006’s studio record, The Great Burrito Extortion Case.
So what, in the end, are we to make of Bowling for Soup? At the very least, the band is a textbook case of how long you can last in the music business when you have a niche, a sense of basic economics and a sense of humor. Even the videos, which have helped keep the band solvent over the years, are proof that creativity is more important than production values.
Because of that, they don’t fool themselves into thinking they are big stars with a safety net. “We just don’t have any money, and when you’re doing it yourself, you gotta do it on a budget,” says Reddick. Regardless, they’ve exceeded their expectations so long ago that they were surprised five years ago that they were still a going concern. And while they hope that it doesn’t end for them tomorrow, they’d hang up their instruments knowing they’ve been luckier than anyone deserves to be. But they are crossing their fingers and toes that doesn’t happen. Sure, they can’t drink like they used to and get more tired on the road than they used to. But at the end of the day, they really don’t know what else they would do that would come close to the fun they still have bowling for soup.
