Michael Gianaris, Democratic Assemblymember for the 36th Assembly District in Queens, was born in Astoria, Queens to Nicholas and Magdalene Gianaris. Mr. Gianaris is a lifelong resident of Astoria and a graduate of the New York City public school system. He attended public School 84, Junior High School 141 and Long Island City High School before graduating Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelors Degree in Economics and Political Science from Fordham University and receiving his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School.

Mr. Gianaris began his involvement in civic affairs in 1988 as the Chairperson of a voter registration committee which registered more than 10,000 voters in the New York metropolitan area. Mr. Gianaris' career in public service began as an aide to Congressman Thomas Manton and he later served as Governor Mario Cuomo's Queens County Regional Representative. In both of these positions, Mr. Gianaris worked to ensure that Queens residents had the necessary access to government services. He also practiced law as a litigator in private practice for more than two years.

Until his campaign for and election to the State Assembly, he served as Associate ounsel to the New York State Assembly, where he worked on several measures that were enacted into law. Specifically, he served as Counsel to the Assembly Committees on Consumer Affairs and Protection, Governmental Operations, Veterans Affairs, and Agriculture and Markets.

In his community, Mr. Gianaris has served as a member of Queens Community Planning Board 1, Legal Counsel to the United Community Civic Association and a Board member of the Eastern Orthodox Lawyers Association.

Both in his civic and governmental capacities, Mr. Gianaris has been a leader on environmental issues, fighting to reduce pollution emanating from western Queens power plants and other emissions sources. As an Assemblymember, he will continue his efforts to reduce pollution and protect the health of our communities.
