Joan Christensen, Democrat, was first elected to the New York State Assembly in 1990 and re-elected in 1992 and 1994. She currently represents a portion of the City of Syracuse and the towns of DeWitt, LaFayette and LaFayette. A long-time resident of Syracuse, Christensen has always been an active community leader.

In 1984, Christensen became the first woman on the City of Syracuse Board of Assessment Review. She continued public service as a three-term Syracuse Common Council member. She also served as the liaison to the Mayor's Syracuse commission for Women.

A graduate of The Metropolitan Business College, Chicago, Illinois, she also attended the Independent Studies Program at Syracuse University.

Christensen, the mother of four, resides on the Eastside of Syracuse.

In the State Legislature, Christensen is the Chair of the Assembly's Task Force on Women's Issues. She serves as a member of the Assembly Aging, Higher Education, Housing, Labor, Real Property Taxation and Small Business Committees. Christensen is an Honorary Member of the New York State Assembly Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force and a member of the Assembly Majority Task Force on Workers' Compensation Reform.
