Michael Benjamin has 20 years of community and government experience. He was the first African American to head the Bronx Board of Elections. In 2001, he ran unsuccessfully for the City Council from the 16th District.

Michael Benjamin has worked with community organizations on issues of political redistricting, restoring city services, improving education, fighting environmental racism, and making our neighborhoods safer. He serves on the advisory boards of the Bronx Educational Opportunity Center and the Davidson Senior Center.

He has proven that he knows how to get things done. He has worked for three Members of the Assembly: Hector Diaz; José Serrano; and Aurelia Greene. As the District Director for Representative José E. Serrano, he was the liaison between the Congressman and borough, city and state elected officials, labor unions, community-based organizations and constituents. As Legislative Director for City Councilman Adolfo Carrión he tracked and drafted city legislation and monitored City Council activities.

His parents came to the Morrisania section of the Bronx from the US Virgin Islands in 1957. He was born at Bronx Hospital on Fulton Avenue, lived as a child on Bristow Street, and attended PS 130 on Prospect Avenue. These landmarks in his life are all in the 79th Assembly District. A son of the district will now serve it.
