Congressman Steve Israel was elected this past November to his first term representing the second congressional district which encompasses all of the Towns of Islip, and Babylon, and parts of Huntington and Smithtown in western Suffolk County on Long Island. Before his election to congress, Israel served on the Huntington Town Board for seven years, representing nearly 200,000 residents. He was twice re-elected by some of the widest majorities in recent Town history. Before that, he served on Capitol Hill as a Legislative Assistant to Rep. Richard Ottinger (D-NY) and was an Assistant Suffolk County Executive in charge of Intergovernmental Relations.

As a councilman, Israel forged a prominent reputation as a bipartisan leader who reduced and stabilized taxes for six consecutive years; brought Huntington’s municipal bond rating from worst to first in the entire region; and passed a $15 million environmental protection program that will save hundreds of Long Island acres from over development.

Israel created the Route 110 Partnership to create and retain environmentally friendly jobs in Suffolk County and to reduce sprawl. He sponsored legislation calling for an Industrial Development Agency to recruit new business, helped pass balanced re-zoning to encourage the revitalization of the Route 110 corridor, developed a micro-loan program which provides bank supported loans to small businesses, and initiated the Huntington Employment Leadership Program (HELP) which provide multi-faceted assistance to unemployed and displaced workers.

In 1994 he started "Citizen Sunday," a program whereby Israel leads volunteers in neighborhood clean-ups and other environmental projects. Last year, Israel won the Child Care Council of Suffolk’s Award for Leadership and in 1999, Israel received the Purple Aster Award of the New York State Order Sons of Italy and the Anti-Defamation League.

Steve Israel was raised on the south shore of Long Island and has two daughters, ages 13 and 10.
