Okay, so there it was. The first horrible, wonderful, can't bear to watch it, can't bear to look away from it Episode 1. The girl who's mom was a drug addict had some potential, and a couple others (the Shakira sound-a-like?) may be interesting to watch. No standouts really yet though. Seattle is being hyped as the worst city ever for A.I. auditions, so we'll see. Now one must wonder: do people SUCK on purpose in order make an attempt to be the next William Hung?
Thomas and Jordan look good to be finalists. They have nice voices, they look 'moldable' and those kinds of contestants usually make it pretty far. It's unfair to say Seattle has the worst talent, since most of the really bad singers were from other parts of the country. The Idol series loves to spotlight siblings - but we finally get a brother/sister combo that have some talent. Can't wait to see how it shakes out - if either of them make it to the top 12. They really pumped that Blake story. I guess crying dads are in vogue ever since the McPheever of season 5. Pure cheese factor. The whole show tonight spotlighted the bottom of the barrel, but the most frightening were Meesha and Jennifer. YIKES Yikes yikes. It always leaves me speculating if these people really are as unaware as they put on that they cannot sing at all. However, Simon shouldn't tell people they look like a monkey. As funny as it is to see people sing badly, insulting the way someone looks has never bode well for Simon and he should just cut it out, because there is zero entertainment value in just being a bully. Boring!
Note to producers: nice montage of everyone singing Pussycat Dolls, especially the folks who definitely are not HOT, but it would be funnier if when you asked them to sing the song you gave them a minute to learn the words.
Anyone else waiting for Paula to pass out at any moment?
Memphis brought a couple good male blues singers, but it seems unlikely that they will go the distance after last year's win with Taylor Hicks. The show is always best when the final 8 are of different genres, so ok, now the blues/rock white dude slot is covered. We need some good R&B and a nice pop singer. The producers haven't really revealed any standouts yet - so come on - give us something to think about!
The meanness level wasn't as high tonight, but it is hard to believe that there is still any geniune incredulousness left in the judges. But hey, at least Paula didn't look like she was going to fall off her spinning chair tonight.
Yes! Thank you NYC. We finally seem to have some really viable contenders here. The girl who sang Tina Arena - check! The guy who was on last season - check! The dude who is a Justin Timberlake wanna be - check! The nouveau soul singer - check! Fun moment of the night - the two girls who were friends. They seemed so genuine at first, but those claws came out in the endgame. The non-trained singer so didn't 'want' it as bad as the other girl, made her WAY more appealing. Carole Bayer Sager may seem a bit plasticized and out of touch, but she was able to grasp some of the more interesting talents. OPERA SINGING GIRL - go for a Charlotte Church sideways approach. Be hip and stylized, but sing pop in your trained voice. Well I'd like to see that at least once. So thank you NYC - most entertainingly diverse night so far (or at least the producers swayed us to feel that way.) And all the complaining by Rosie O'Donnell and others worked - the mean factor was in half tonight. Can't wait for Alabama.
Definitely definitely - the mean factor continues to be turned down. The show seems to be closer to the light-hearted, laugh-out-loud style of the first few seasons. It's impossible to keep the innocence the show once had, because now every single "Big Bird" singer that comes on just reeks of William Hung wanna-be-isms. Larry King even devoted an unbearable hour to the not-so-funny cast offs from NYC last week. Good singers tonight though - nobody super exciting, but a few solid contenders. The girl with the super long hair wasn't that bad - could've been interesting to watch her with the more mainstream kids in Hollywood. The "Kiss from a Rose" singer was unique...but I wonder if they will ever show him again. Until next week in LA ...
That was definitely the best show so far. Fast-paced. You were able to finally see a greater number of the singers. Poor little Baylie. She sure picked the wrong group. Simon must've been bummed when she absolutely froze. She should try out again next year and win the whole thing. We don't need another girl from the country singing country again yet anyhow. And what was up with that comment from Amanda about God takes care of his people, or something? Anybody with the exact quote - comment on this page. I couldn't believe she said that considering she basically blew it and only remembered half of her words. Luckily they booted her in the end. Her 'friend' isn't that good anyhow. She'll be eliminated quickly, because, unfortunately she hasn't learned that AMERICA votes for performance, ability, personality, but they like their American Idols humble and hungry to win. No cat claws allowed in this thing. It's too boring and oh so cliche'. Too bad the Tina Arena singer didn't make it, she seemed pretty good. The guy foursome was the best thing of the night, but will the guy who beatboxed continue on? Looking forward to the final 24 tonight.
The guys have it. There are so many more interesting candidates amongst the male constestants. The females are all just trying way too hard. They make you feel embarrassed just watching them. Too bad the 'best friend' made it through tonight...she is so pretentious.
Hey people - gotta make this one short. Everyone was so nervous tonight! Poor Sundance, he just blew it big time. How awesome was it that Blake sang a KEANE song and Chris Sligh covered Mute Math?? Thanks Chris Daughtry, you made it OK to not cover bad pop songs anymore. Simon is pushing Chris Richardson for some reason. And Randy - you are the big meanie now. Paul Kim has a sweet voice - someone help him pick a more current song (although Guilty Pleasure that Careless Whisper...) I am not looking forward to the girls - ain't that sad? After tonight I'm rootin' for the Chrises.
